13TH MUNICH ECONOMIC SUMMIT
Free Trade and Prosperity
15 May - 16 May 2014
Just like capitalism and globalisation, free trade is one of those concepts that, despite having lifted the standard of living of countless millions, still give rise to ambivalent feelings. Even in France, which has undeniably benefited from it, free trade is regarded with deep suspicion.
After the financial crisis and the debacles it spawned, even its proponents seemed to be on the defensive. Still, free trade is the one big guarantor of prosperity. Is Europe doing enough to promote it globally?

After Bali
For all its win-win logic, free trade is terribly hard to make acceptable to all parties. Even within single markets like the EU’s, countries are busily throwing up all kinds of non-tariff barriers. Further stumbling blocks are the stubborn defence of an outdated agricultural policy and the doomed attempts to solve some countries’ lack of competitiveness by hiding behind fortress-like walls. The breakthrough achieved in Bali opened new perspectives for world trade. But what are the real snags, and is there space for compromise? Are bilateral or regional trade agreements a suitable interim solution, or do they just undermine the sought-after global agreement while posing endless headaches to industry?

Panel 2
Boosting Transatlantic Trade
Waning it may be, with other hopefuls snapping at its heels for the world economic supremo slot, but the USA still is the EU’s largest trade partner.
A free-trade agreement with it would work wonders to smooth out the remaining wrinkles in their trade relations. Throw in Canada, the EU’s twelfth largest trade partner, and Mexico, the 20th largest, and you have every reason to look for ways to enhance trade ties with North America. Is Europe ready for a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership? Who stands to benefit? Who stands to lose? What can it mean for a freer global trade? How does the rest perceive TTIP?

BRICS for Europe to Build With
For all their uneven performance of late, the BRICS still outpace the developed economies in growth and dynamism. And they still have a long way to climb. Add in the benefits offered by comparative advantages and specialisation and the trading opportunities are mouth-watering. What can Europe do to enhance trade with these countries? What can the BRICS do to enhance trade with the EU? Where are the most likely synergies? Which are the next BRICS-grade economies?
