14TH MUNICH ECONOMIC SUMMIT
Competitiveness and Innovation - The Quest for Best
21 May - 22 May 2015
To stay ahead, Europe needs to be nimbler and innovative: relying on the way that first made it prosperous will not be enough. Its companies must crank up product and process innovation, its member countries must provide infrastructure and governance to allow individuals and companies to unfold their talents, and its societies must develop entrepreneurial solutions to social challenges.
Can Europe regain its zest? The 14th Munich Economic Summit has taken an in-depth look into these issues and examined avenues for fostering both productive and social innovation.

EU Competitiveness
What Has Gone Right, What Has Gone Wrong
In the run-up to the euro crisis, some EU countries became highly competitive, such as Germany, while others became woefully uncompetitive, such as those most deeply affected by the crisis itself. What is behind this divergence? What must be done to restore the balance? Why did Ireland and the Baltics pull it off, while others are still in the doldrums? What should the EU’s strategy be?

Economy and Civil Society
How innovation drives change
Ideally, the main actors in competitiveness and innovation – economy, the state, society and individuals – should cross-pollinate. What is the proper role for the state in this regard: catalyst, facilitator, regulator, or should it simply step aside and let those who can, do? Should companies participate in shaping social changes, rather than merely reacting to them? What is their share in developing entrepreneurial solutions to social challenges? On the other hand, what can civil society contribute and how can it drive change in the corporate world, society and state?
